Our Spirit

A Brotherhood Aflame with the Love of God & Neighbour

St. Joseph's OMI Seminary, located at No. 26, Green Path, Kohuwala, is home to the Oblate Juniorate of the Colombo Province of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate — the first and foundational stage of Oblate formation. Here, young men from across Sri Lanka live, pray, study, and grow together, shaped by the missionary vision of our founder, St. Eugene de Mazenod, who declared: "He had a heart as big as the world."

The Oblate Charism

He will preach the Gospel to the poor; he will heal the broken-hearted, preach deliverance to the captives, give sight to the blind, set at liberty those who are oppressed.
Luke 4:18 — The Scripture at the heart of the Oblate vocation

The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate were founded by St. Eugene de Mazenod on 25 January 1816 in Aix-en-Provence, France, and received Papal approbation on 17 February 1826. Pope Pius XI described them as "specialists in the most difficult missions of the Church." The Oblates first arrived in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in October 1847, accompanying Bishop Bettachini, and have served this island nation for over 175 years. Today, the Colombo Province counts 159 Oblates making the OMI the largest religious congregation of men in Sri Lanka.

Evangelisation of the Poor

The Oblate decree, confirmed in 1982, is to be "devoted principally to the evangelization of the poor" — those whose condition cries out for salvation. This is the heart of our mission in Sri Lanka.

🤝

Missionary Brotherhood

Oblates take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, plus "perseverance until death" as a sign of their missionary commitment. All possessions are held in common; life is lived in fraternal community.

🕊

Marian Devotion

As Oblates of Mary Immaculate, the community has a deep devotion to Our Lady. Sri Lanka is blessed with hundreds of churches dedicated to Mary as a result of Oblate missionary efforts over generations.

🌍

Global Missionary Reach

The OMI congregation sends missionaries to over 60 countries. Sri Lankan Oblates are actively present in Japan, South Korea, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and beyond — carrying the flame of the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

4

Community Apostolate

The seminary community at Kohuwala is not inward-looking. Even during formation, Juniorists are gradually introduced to the missionary apostolate of the Oblates — visiting parishes, serving communities, and encountering the poor. This pastoral immersion prepares them to be missionaries before they are priests.

Parish Ministry

Juniorists serve in local parishes around Kohuwala and the greater Colombo area, assisting at liturgies, youth groups, and catechesis programmes.

👨‍👩‍👧

Social Outreach

Community visits to hospitals, orphanages, and homes for the elderly cultivate compassion and a preferential love for the poor at the heart of the Oblate mission.

📚

Vocation Promotion

Juniorists participate in vocation camps, school visits, and "Come and See" programmes to inspire the next generation of candidates to consider the missionary life.

🎭

Preaching & Drama

Following the Oblate tradition of street plays, processions, and public witness, Juniorists develop communication and preaching skills through community programmes.

🌏

Peace & Reconciliation

In the spirit of the OMI peace education mission, candidates engage with the multicultural fabric of Sri Lanka, fostering reconciliation across ethnic and religious divides.

🏥

Hospital Ministry

Proximity to the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital enables the community to serve the sick and suffering, accompanying families and patients in their hour of need.

Community Traditions

The liturgical calendar, Oblate feasts, and annual community events bind the seminary community together across the years. These traditions connect the present generation of Juniorists to the 175-year-old heritage of Oblate mission in Sri Lanka.

  • 🎉
Parents' Day An annual celebration that brings Juniorists' families to the seminary, strengthening the bond between home and vocation. Students showcase their talents through performances, reaffirming family as an essential partner in formation.
  • Feast of St. Eugene de Mazenod (May 21) The feast of the Oblate Founder is celebrated with special Mass, communal gatherings, and reflection on the Oblate charism. A day of gratitude and renewed missionary commitment.
  • 📿
Feast of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (December 8) As Oblates of Mary Immaculate, this Marian feast is one of the most significant celebrations in the community calendar, marked by solemn liturgy, procession, and Marian consecration.
  • 🏆
Annual Sports Meet An inter-house sports day fosters teamwork, healthy competition, and community spirit among Juniorists — part of the Oblate commitment to integral human formation in body as well as spirit.
  • 🕯
Annual Retreat & Days of Recollection A full community retreat each year, as well as regular monthly recollection days, provides sacred space for deep prayer, examination of conscience, and renewed dedication to the Oblate vocation.
  • 🎓
Sending-Off Ceremony When Juniorists move on to Pre-Novitiate or other stages of formation, the community gathers for a sending-off ceremony — a moment of blessing, gratitude, and commissioning for the next step of their journey.
